Mathematics is the subject where most SSC 10th students either score very well or lose marks due to avoidable errors. The good news is that Maths is one of the most scoring subjects if you follow the right approach. Here are seven proven tips from our teaching experience at Scholar Academy.
1. Master the High-Weightage Chapters First
Not all chapters carry equal marks. Prioritise these:
Algebra: Linear Equations in Two Variables (12-14 marks), Quadratic Equations (10-12 marks), Arithmetic Progression (8-10 marks), and Statistics (8-10 marks).
Geometry: Circle (14-16 marks), Coordinate Geometry (8-10 marks), Trigonometry (10-12 marks), and Similarity (8-10 marks).
Completing these chapters thoroughly can get you 70+ marks out of the total.
2. Solve Every Textbook Example and Exercise
The SSC board exam draws heavily from textbook problems. Many exam questions are direct variations of textbook exercises. Solve every single problem in the textbook at least twice before moving to reference books.
3. Practise Previous Years’ Papers Religiously
Attempt at least the last 5 years’ board papers. You will notice patterns in which types of questions repeat. Time yourself and write answers exactly as you would in the exam.
4. Never Skip Theorems and Proofs
In Geometry, theorems carry significant marks. Students often skip these because they seem difficult to memorise. Instead of rote memorisation, understand the logical flow of each proof. Draw diagrams and practise writing proofs step by step.
5. Build a Formula Sheet
Create a single page of all formulae for Algebra and another for Geometry. Revise these sheets every morning. By exam time, you should be able to recall any formula within seconds.
6. Manage Your Time in the Exam
The Maths paper is 80 marks in 2.5 hours. A practical split:
- First 15 minutes: Read the paper, plan your approach
- Next 90 minutes: Solve all questions you know well
- Next 30 minutes: Attempt challenging questions
- Last 15 minutes: Review and verify calculations
7. Avoid These Common Mistakes
- Not showing steps: The board awards marks for method, not just the answer. Write every step clearly.
- Calculation errors: Double-check arithmetic, especially in Algebra word problems and Trigonometry.
- Skipping units and labels: Always mention units (cm, sq cm, degrees) in your final answer.
- Messy diagrams: Use a pencil and ruler for Geometry constructions. Label all points clearly.
- Leaving questions blank: Even a partially correct approach earns marks. Attempt every question.
