10th SSC Science Important Questions — Chapter-Wise Guide

Study Tips|By Scholar Academy

Science is a high-scoring subject in the SSC 10th board exam if you know which chapters carry the most marks and what types of questions to expect. This chapter-wise guide covers the most important topics and question patterns based on previous years’ papers.

Marks Distribution Overview

The SSC 10th Science paper is worth 80 marks (written exam) and covers Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. The approximate weightage is:

  • Physics: 25-28 marks
  • Chemistry: 25-28 marks
  • Biology: 24-27 marks

High-Weightage Chapters

Physics

1. Effects of Electric Current (10-12 marks) This is the most important Physics chapter. Focus on:

  • Ohm’s Law numerical problems
  • Series and parallel circuit calculations
  • Magnetic effects of electric current
  • Fleming’s Left Hand Rule and Right Hand Rule

2. Light — Reflection and Refraction (8-10 marks)

  • Mirror formula and lens formula numericals
  • Ray diagrams for concave and convex mirrors
  • Ray diagrams for convex lenses
  • Human eye defects and corrections

Chemistry

3. Chemical Reactions and Equations (8-10 marks)

  • Balancing chemical equations
  • Types of chemical reactions with examples
  • Oxidation and reduction reactions
  • Corrosion and rancidity

4. Acids, Bases, and Salts (6-8 marks)

  • pH scale and its applications
  • Reactions of acids and bases with metals
  • Preparation of common salts
  • Neutralisation reactions

5. Carbon and Its Compounds (8-10 marks)

  • Nomenclature of carbon compounds (IUPAC naming)
  • Homologous series
  • Chemical properties of ethanol and ethanoic acid
  • Soaps and detergents

Biology

6. Life Processes (8-10 marks)

  • Nutrition in humans and plants (photosynthesis)
  • Human digestive system diagram and functions
  • Respiration process
  • Transportation in plants (xylem and phloem)

7. Heredity and Evolution (6-8 marks)

  • Mendel’s laws of inheritance
  • Monohybrid and dihybrid cross
  • Sex determination in humans
  • Evolution and natural selection

Types of Questions to Expect

Very Short Answer (1 mark): Definitions, one-word answers, fill in the blanks. These are usually direct textbook questions.

Short Answer (2-3 marks): Explain a concept, give reasons, differentiate between two terms. Practice writing answers in 3-4 sentences.

Long Answer (4-5 marks): Detailed explanations with diagrams. These often come from high-weightage chapters listed above.

Numerical Problems (3-5 marks): Especially from Physics chapters on electricity and optics. Practise formula-based calculations daily.

Preparation Strategy

  1. Complete NCERT-equivalent textbook thoroughly. Every line in the textbook is a potential question.
  2. Draw and label diagrams for Biology and Physics topics. Neat diagrams with labels carry full marks.
  3. Practise numericals daily from electricity and optics chapters. Speed and accuracy both matter.
  4. Write chemical equations repeatedly until balancing becomes automatic.
  5. Solve previous years’ papers to understand the exam pattern and marking scheme.
